Gallbladder illness is characterized by inflammation, infection, stones, or gallbladder obstruction. The gallbladder is a pouch underneath the liver. It collects and concentrates bile from the liver. Bile assists in fat digestion and is secreted from the gallbladder into the upper small intestine in reaction to diet (particularly lipids). Intermittent discomfort, known as biliary colic, is the most frequent and mild indication of gallbladder illness. A patient often complains of constant gripping or gnawing pain in the upper right abdomen near the rib cage, which can be severe and spread to the upper back. Some biliary colic sufferers have discomfort beneath the breastbone. It is possible to have nausea or vomiting. Between 1% and 3% of persons with symptomatic gallstones develop gallbladder inflammation (acute cholecystitis), which happens when stones or sludge obstruct the duct. The symptoms are comparable to those of biliary colic, but they are more severe and chronic. They include intense, continuous discomfort in the upper right abdomen that might continue for days.
